Harvest Has Started – Don’t Forget the Sheep!

November 26, 2024

Harvest has started early this year and, while everyone is out on their harvesters, now is the perfect time to plan ahead for the feed you’ll need. Whether it's EasyOne®, LambGro®, or EasyWay®, this is the ideal moment to get organised. In fact, many farmers are already booking their feed through our grain trade program, all while driving the headers and planning for the feed needed in the months ahead.

It's also worth remembering that holidays are just around the corner. Having feed on hand, ready to go, can relieve a lot of stress for both those staying on the farm and those off enjoying a well-earned break. With EasyOne®, LambGro®, or EasyWay®, it’s as simple as heading to the silos, filling up the sheep feeder and off you go.

Ensuring good nutrition for sheep during the long, dry summer (which this year is forecasted to be hotter and longer than usual) requires continuous monitoring and strategic planning. By aligning feed and water supplies with their needs, you can maintain acceptable levels of productivity, health and welfare. This is especially important where Condition is King. To achieve the best lambing rates and top sheep prices, condition truly is king.

Stubble quality will decline quickly in the hot conditions and, with the additional trampling this year (especially if a seed terminator is used), the grain that once remained in the stubble is now minimal. The more efficient the harvester, the less feed is left behind. Powder left behind from the seed terminator does not grow weeds but also cannot feed your livestock.

The Ag Department has made an important point regarding stubble levels:

“While there is often up to three tonnes of dry plant material per hectare available, sheep grazing stubbles typically consume only about 6% of it. With increased harvesting efficiency and better weed control, stubble paddocks now generally contain less grain and fewer weeds than in the past.”

This is where EasyOne, LambGro and EasyWay will fit into your farming system. They’re easy to use, no weeds can germinate from the pellets and they provide a well-balanced feed for your sheep.

·      EasyOne® is a nutritionally balanced 9mm pellet designed to be fed to ewes and lambs. EasyOne® requires no adaptation – lambs are on full feed from Day 1 and therefore can reach a heavier weight earlier. No additional roughage is required, adding value by saving time, labour and investment in capital equipment. The technology used to produce EasyOne makes the stored nutrients more readily available for lamb growth and modifies rumen acidity, ensuring lambs grow faster without the stress of eating traditional full grain rations.

·      LambGro® is a nutritionally balanced 4mm pellet containing the necessary energy, protein, calcium and phosphorus to maximise lamb growth and increase survival rates and feedlot performance.

·      EasyWay® is a nutritionally balanced 9mm pellet designed to maintain body weight over summer. It is a low-cost maintenance ration ideal for all types of sheep when feed is limited.
