Milne feeds is pleased to distribute Flybuster in Western Australia. This innovative, eco-friendly fly baiting system provides livestock enterprises with a cost-effective solution to manage fly populations and build a ‘fly barrier’ around dairies, feedlots, sheds and stables. Stocks have recently arrived – just at the right time of year!
Whether it be nuisance flies, or the biting stable fly, these pests go hand-in-hand with the Australian summer. With an exponential breeding cycle, fly populations quickly get out of hand and cause havoc in livestock and farming operations. Fly strike in sheep and spread of disease are well recognised, but the ramifications for loss of production should not be overlooked. Animals trying to escape flies will often herd together, generating extra body heat, which must be dissipated, or engage in constant stomping, skin twitching, tail flicking and head shaking – all of which burn energy which could otherwise go into milk production or weight gain. As we all have experienced, flies also make for an unpleasant work environment for humans, particularly the biting fly. So, when a solution for fly management on large-scale farm operations presented, Milne Feeds took the opportunity to make it available to WA farmers.
Flybuster was originally developed in Israel, where intensive farming operations, in close proximity to human populations, led to the development of a fly management system that was not only effective, but easy and safe to use. The plant-based bait used in Flybuster ensures no foreign pathogens are brought on to the farm, whilst the one-way trap means there is no need for pesticides or poisons – the flies simply drown in the liquid. The smell, warmth, moisture, CO2, and protein contained in the trap mimic animal attractants and draw flies away from livestock and into the trap. Once inside, flies lay eggs and die, thus breaking the breeding cycle. As the fly bait is plant-based, it can easily be disposed of in the compost, green-waste or manure pile.
What is Flybuster?
How can it help you?
Flybuster applications:
Flybuster attracts all filth fly species, making it suitable for use in many situations:
- Dairy farm operations
- Beef & Sheep feedlots
- Pig & Chicken farm operations
- Horse stables
- Market garden operations
- Abattoirs
How it works:
How to use Flybuster:
1. In a 10L trap bucket, mix 250g of bait into 5L litres of warm/tepid water. Stir to ensure bait is dispersed in the water.
2. Allow 24 hours for the bait to activate.
3. Place traps approx. 15 meters apart above ground level around sheds, feedlots, dairies, or 'hot spots' .
4. Check traps and top up with water as needed. Adequate water level is important for full function.
5. Empty trap and refill bait every 4 weeks, or when full.
Each trap has a capacity of three million flies, making it perfect for agricultural areas with major fly infestations. The Flybuster system provides a long-term solution for significant fly reduction. It is cost effective, requires little maintenance and is safe to handle.
Flybuster is available now from Milne Feeds. Traps come in bundles of 10, whilst the bait comes in buckets of 15kg. Each trap takes 250g of bait per month. One bucket of bait will fill 60 traps for one month.
