A Piece of History

April 28, 2023

Recently, the team from Milne were lucky enough to catch up with David Martin, from Williams, at the Martin family farm. Dave comes from a long line of farmers, and has a keen interest in the history and restoration of farm equipment. He kindly spent time showing us around the farm and their beautiful collection of restored machinery, including his current project - a Milne truck from the late 1930s.

With restoration in his blood, Dave came across a Diamond T truck, circa late 1930s, and relished the chance to take it home and restore it to its former glory. This particular Diamond T was an original Milne Feeds delivery truck, as shown by the W.H. Milne across the top and the list of stockfeed items available on the cab doors. Dave mentioned that trucks of this era are considered a rarity, as many were used in the war and are therefore no longer around.

Whilst the truck has certainly aged, it is in remarkable condition. In those days, the Diamond T frames were made from wood, most of which has deteriorated, but the metal cab is still in great shape. Some of the original chrome features are still present. Dave tells us that the engine even still turns over!

It seems the truck was used on a farm southeast of Kulin in its later years and then was sold at a clearing sale for about 50c during the 80s. It continued its life as a farm run-about until it was driven on to blocks and put to rest for many years, until Dave came across it.

The truck is now going through the journey of having a refurbished wood frame and tray, and restoration of the metal body.  We are looking forward to seeing this beautiful piece of history when Dave has finished the project.

Footnote - Dave is putting a call-out to anyone who may have some original Diamond T parts lying around that might be salvageable for this truck.  Anyone who can help is asked to email sales@milne.com.au.
